Our annual car seat checkpoint tests the safety of individual car seats and checks for proper installation.
You may ask why is car seat safety important?
With good reason — unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in children, and most such injuries are from automobile crashes. Child safety seats can greatly reduce the risk of a potentially fatal injury, especially for babies but also for toddlers. Yet many safety seats are used incorrectly.
Our members volunteer throughout Methuen on many different service projects.
We are in our inaugural year and have already launched a free children reading book giveaway, a car seat check point and a kids bicycle safety rodeo.
We have also connected with our Kiwanis Key club at Methuen High School.
We are moving and shaking and can really use more volunteer members to further share our positive impact on our youth.
The purpose of our Bike Safety Checkpoint & Rodeo is to raise awareness for bicycle related injuries, allow children to test their bicycle handling skills on their own bikes, and encourage increased helmet use by kids of all ages. We include a skills course including braking without skidding, walking the bike thru Crosswalks, waiting at Stop signs, etc. We also conduct a bicycle and helmet fitting to allow for proper fit and increase safety.
There is also a safety testing station where children will be able to test their brakes, tire pressure, gears, and tighten all nuts and bolts.
